You know what, my family’s 2007 Honda Accord is now older than the 1989 Oldsmobile I got when I got it in college in 2003. We don’t really need a new car right now, but with gas prices and such, it just got me thinking, what is the state of electric vehicles right now? Let’s dive in!
And honestly, it just shows you how long it’s going to be before EVs are everywhere.
In its 2021 Energy Transition Outlook (ETO), DNV forecasts that 50% of all new vehicles sales will be EVs by 2030 in the United States
That right there are only the new vehicles. All of the used cars will be on the road for a very, very long time.
This part is pretty awesome news though:
Even more compelling is that the Department of Energy published reports showing that volumetric energy density of batteries has increased more than 400% from 2008 to 2020. This has enabled an EV to travel the same distance with a smaller battery pack thus saving space, weight, and manufacturing costs
Those batteries are getting better and better.

This video was pretty interesting:
I’ll list out a few things I found good to know.
5-10% of vehicle sales are electric
0-60 in 7 seconds is common
Expect around a 200 mile range
About half of EVs are under $45k
Charging will cost you around $50 per month on average.
One of the big chargers will cost about $1,500.

Assuming the prices for EVs fall, can they save you money after you own one?
According to a study from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Idaho National Laboratory, electric car owners can save as much as $14,500 on fuel costs by owning an electric car for 15 years.
…
Thanks to their battery, EVs have fewer moving parts than gas-powered cars. This means you can forget about oil changes, wear on transmissions, spark plugs going bad, and other minor maintenance requirements that add up over time. Most EVs also utilize regenerative braking. This means the motor does most of the braking, further reducing wear on the brake pads and rotors.
In fact, a report from analytics firm We Predict found that service costs were almost a third lower for EVs than gas-powered vehicles after three years on the road.

Maybe fully electric isn’t the most pragmatic option. But you can still beat the gas prices!
There are hybrids, which store energy from things like breaking.
And there are plug-in hybrids, which have a battery for like, 50 miles (perfect for 90 percent of driving, honestly, if you’re in a city), and gas for longer hauls.
Here is an article on which one might be the best fit.

Well, it was a good week for controlled eating. And I’m not playing games with measuring my weight later in the day or right after a workout, which is where some of my previous “progress” may have been coming from. So, I’m hopeful that I can keep these kinds of things up and slowly knock down my weight again. Since February though, definitely been hovering in this area, so, this will take time. Probably won’t reach my target by my desired one year mark. But you know what, that’s okay.
